The Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra (NRSO) is one of the best orchestras in Holland and is known for its flexibility and versatility. The orchestra is part of the Music Centre of the Netherlands Public Radio and Television. In conjunction with the Dutch broadcasting organisations it stands up for lesser known repertoire. By new presentation formats, for instance coupling classical music to pop or world music, it aims to attract young and new audiences.

Due to a major reorganisation of the "Muziekcentrum van de Omroep" a large group of musicians of the NRSO will continue to work in the "Radio Filharmonisch Orkest" and the "Radio Kamerfilharmonie".

As from the season 2003/2004 the internationally highly respected Hans Vonk will be the orchestra's chief conductor. He follows up Estonian Eri Klas, who was chief from 1996 up to 2003, and under whose inspiring leadership the orchestra developed enormously. As from September 2003 Eri Klas will be the orchestra's principal guest conductor.

In the orchestra’s artistic activities special attention is paid to Dutch and French music and therefore the NRSO works together regularly with conductors specialised in these areas: Ed Spanjaard, Reinbert de Leeuw, Marc Soustrot, Jean-Bernard Pommier and Pascal Rophé. Furthermore, internationally well-known conductors such as Stanislav Skrowaczewski, Jaap van Zweden, Jiri Kout and Nicolai Alexeev appear with the orchestra on a regular basis. Thanks to its special relationship with the Netherlands Radio Choir and its chief conductor Simon Halsey, the orchestra is able to present lesser known operas and oratoria.

The NRSO is aware of the need to support young talented musicians and with great pleasure performs in international comptetitions and masterclasses such as the Franz Liszt Piano Competition, the Oscar Back Violin Competition and the Kondrashin International Masterclass for conductors.

The NRSO also plays an important role in promoting Dutch music. Its longstanding relationship with the Dutch label CNM has produced many excellent CD-recordings of Dutch music. Furthermore the NRSO records for the Naxos and Stardivarius labels. During the season 2003/2004 the orchestra will embark on several recording projects: the complete Symphonies by Brahms ( for Pentatone Music, conducted by Hans Vonk) and the complete Concertos for orchestra by Petrassi (for Stradivarius, conducted by Arturo Tamayo).
